What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a problem involving the sciatic nerve, a large nerve which runs from the low back to the leg. It can cause pain in the buttock and lower limb. Even though the use of this term is quite common it is not a medical condition in and of itself but rather a symptom of another problem involving this nerve.
What causes sciatica?
It can be caused by any number of conditions that irritate or compress the sciatic nerve. The most common causes are a herniated disc, degenerative changes in the spine or spondylolisthesis (slippage of a vertebra).
Treatment
Treatment is aimed at working on the related joints, muscles, ligaments or tendons to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve.
