If you’ve ever suffered from a headache, then you would know just how debilitating they can be. Sleep may be disrupted, concentrating is impossible, and day to day life becomes so much harder.
A headache is defined as pain in any region of the head, and neck. In fact, anything that irritates the nerves in your neck, skull or face has the potential to cause headaches. Osteopaths are trained to differentiate between benign headaches, and those due to more serious pathology. We treat headaches such as migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, and headaches arising from neck structures (cervicogenic headache).
How can Osteopaths help?
As Osteopaths, we pride ourselves on being able to detect dysfunctions in the body that contribute to nervous system issues. We also work to detect any dysfunction caused by increased load on the soft tissues of the head and neck. By relieving tension in the muscles and releasing joints in the neck, we can often improve symptoms quite quickly.
We perform a comprehensive history and examination to determine where the symptoms are coming from. We often find that the dysfunctions we identify (commonly the upper neck region) are chronic and relate back to a history of trauma or postural changes due to habit or occupation.
Although headaches and migraines can be debilitating, with proper diagnosis and treatment they can become better managed to increase your quality of life.
